Swift worldwide

Swift is a non-profit and cooperative society, being established in May, 1973 by 239 banks from 15 European and North American countries. The purpose of its establishment was to replace the non-standard communication written means or telex with a standardized means in the international level. Over 7000 institutes from 197 countries are currently having membership in SWIFT. It should be mentioned that in the year 2001, more than 1.5 billion messages have been transmitted through the world via swift.

The swift headquarter is located in Belgium and acts under the rules and regulations of the said country. Meanwhile, U.S.A, Netherlands, United Kingdom and Hong Kong serve as the back-up centers for the member countries. There is a SAP center (swift access point) in each country which is supervised by the Society for Worldwide Inter Bank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT). (In I.R.Iran the SAP center is located in the Central Bank).

SWIFT

The swift system is being used for sending and receiving any type of messages within the foreign exchange branches inside and outside of the country. All Iranian Banks are connected to SAP in the Central Bank of Islamic Republic of Iran through leased or satellite lines and can send messages to the required banks through the satellite system. SWIFT has become popular due to accelerating foreign exchange dealings, satisfying customers and coordinating all foreign exchange operations worldwide by making use of standard software programs.
